IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR MIRENA DEVICE
Mirena IUCDs, previously approved for 5 years of use, may now be left in for up to 8 years in some situations:
1. When the Mirena is used for contraception
The Mirena has been shown to provide safe and effective contraception for up to 8 years. The change has been approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia, and similarly in the USA and UK.
2. When the Mirena is used to control heavy menstrual bleeding
In this situation it is also safe to leave the Mirena in for up to 8 years when it is still providing effective control of the periods. If bleeding is no longer controlled, a new Mirena or alternative treatment is advisable and should be discussed with your doctor.
If you have received a 5-year recall about your current Mirena, you may opt for an extension if the above situations apply to you. Please contact us and let us know what you would like to do. You also still have the option of having your Mirena removed at any time.
IMPORTANT EXCEPTION TO THE ABOVE- PLEASE NOTE BELOW
1. When the Mirena is used as part of ongoing menopause hormone replacement (MHRT)
In this situation the Mirena MUST BE REMOVED AFTER 5 YEARS as beyond this time the hormone levels in the Mirena are too low to provide adequate protection.
If you have received a 5-year recall in this situation and MHRT use is ongoing, a new Mirena (or alternative treatment) is advised. Please call us to make an appointment.
